Defense Wins Championships - In Fantasy too.

Let's evaluate the top 10 defenses as of this point in the season and determine whether or not they will hold up for the long haul and your playoff run.

Start-Em / Bench ‘Em for Week 8

draft_strategyThe best fantasy offense may be a good defense.  Defense is a position that many take for granted and this season there is a clear reason as to why people don’t draft high on them.  The Bears remain the exception.  Granted the Cardinals ran up some points on them two weeks ago, but they redeemed themselves by scoring a bunch.  The next best defense is the Ravens who have scored about as many fantasy points as the Bears in most scoring formats.  After that it is a hodgepodge of defenses starting with Denver, San Diego, Minnesota, Philadelphia, New England, Atlanta, Arizona, and New Orleans.

Denver has played teams with really no offensive punch so far and this week against Indianapolis will be a good test to determine whether or not they can be trusted.  San Diego falls into the same category having played offensive punchless teams and then playing against San Francisco and Kansas City they proved unreliable.  Minnesota has appeared to be the most consistent of the lower 8 defenses and will face yet another test against New England this week.

Philadelphia’s D started off hot and has now been victimized in the last several weeks.  Their run D and the fact that they give up so many drive of 6 to 8 minutes would seem to doom them.  Their D is predicated off of the high scoring offense making the other teams one dimensional – when they can not get the lead early they are toast.  New England has been flying under the radar and may prove to be a good D for the playoff run.  They were trashed by Buffalo and Denver early, but seems to have stabilized since then.

Then we have Atlanta who seems to get smoked lately by the Saints, Giants and Steelers – they are a fraud.  Cincinnati should be able to continue the recent trend.  Arizona?  Yes, Arizona is in the top 10, but I would not rely on them – even in games that should be favorable – just check last week against Oakland.  New Orleans is a D that may be worth watching in the coming weeks as they seem to have been able to make things happen since playing Atlanta at home.
