Week 7 NFL / Fantasy Wrap-Up

This week is a great example of why they play the games.  Going with the favorites would have killed you this week, if you were the betting sort.  Only the Colts seem to have the pigskin of destiny, however, a few other teams used this week to distance themselves or catch up to the pack.  In the AFC, New England has a 2 game lead and the Broncos now have a 1 game advantage, the Bengals have caught back up to Baltimore, the Colts have 3 games in hand.  In the NFC, it seems to be more bungling than good play the Eagles drop another to let the Giants or Cowboys take the lead over in the East, the Seahawks have allowed St. Louis to get back into a tie with them, the Vikings took a step closer to the Bears and the Falcons used over time to stay one game behind the Saints. From a fantasy perspective the wide receivers are starting to emerge and it is turning around the fates of many teams.

Here is the game by game re-cap of the Week 7 action:

Jacksonville 7 @ Houston 27
This game turned out the opposite of what everyone would have expected.  Jacksonville is really a team that is hot one week and then puts a dud out there.  Houston was clearly the better team yesterday and it showed with the performances that David Carr (224 and 2TD’s), A. Johnson (106 and 1TD) and Wali Lundy (93 yards and 1 TD) put out there against what people thought was a good defense.  Jacksonville’s Fred Taylor was running well, but Byron Leftwich was only 50% passing and threw for only 125 yards.  Maurice Jones-Drew had their only TD and was responsible for 58 yards of the receiving.  Carr had one bad game so far and so did Johnson, but they are legitimate fantasy starters it seems.  Leftwich is too hot and cold and Taylor and Drew are the only real threats here for Jacksonville.

Carolina 14 @ Cincinnati 17
The Panthers finally lost a game with Steve Smith this year, but it wasn’t Steve’s fault (126 rec. yards).  Delhomme played OK with 238 yards, 2TD’s and 1 INT.  Foster never had a chance to get large numbers but still averaged over 5 yards per carry rushing for 59 yards on 14 carries and adding another 20 in receptions.  Keyshawn Johnson has diminished a bit since Steve Smith returned and this week he had 4 grabs for 41 yards.  Carson Palmer played well throwing for 240 yards and 2 TD’s.  His main target more and more seems to be T.J. Houshmandzadeh who had 7 grabs for 61 yards and a TD, Chad had 6 catches for 73 yards, Rudi Johnson rushed for 101 yards on the day.  Cincinnati is back in the thick of things with this win and Carolina is 2 behind New Orleans and one behind Atlanta with the loss.

New England 28 @ Buffalo 6
New England is a team that continues to improve and seems to get better each week.  Not that Buffalo is a test for them at this point, but they do what it takes to get the job done. Tom Brady passed for 195 yards and 2 TD’s, Corey Dillon ran in 2 TD’s and 47 yards, Maroney had 29.  Ben Watson was the main target for Brady with 5 catches.  Gabriel and Jackson each had a TD reception.  Lee Evans was neutralized as Losman threw for only 193 yards and an INT.  Price had 5 catches for 53 yards.  McGahee ran for 59 yards on 20 carries. New England is on a roll right now and their running game is the fantasy focus where it seems Dillon still gets the TD’s.  Tom Brady is the main fantasy player and there is not a real receiving threat outside of TE Watson.  The Bills are killing McGahee by falling behind quickly in games.  Their defense seems to have disappeared from the early season and Evans can not be counted on.

Pittsburgh 38 @ Atlanta 41 OT
Two good defenses at the start of the day were both shredded for tons of passing yards and rushing yards to boot.  Roethlisberger was knocked out early in the third quarter, but ws having a great day before that throwing for 238 yards and 3 TD’s.  Batch did well in relief throwing for 2 TD’s and 195 yards.  Parker disappointed with no receptions and only 47 yards rushing.  Hines Ward was the man with 3 TD’s and 171 receiving yards.  Santonio Holmes had 91 yards on 5 catches and Nate Washington caught a TD pass as well as TE Heath Miller.  Michael Vick used this game to silence his critics (yours truly included), by throwing for 4 TD’s – to be true to myself he was 18 of 30 for 232 yards and 4TD’s with 2 INTs. So, yes he threw 4 TD’s so that needs to be respected and appreciated.  Warrick Dunn struggled to get his 69 yards and Norwood was effective with 69 yards on 8 carries.  Alge Crumpler was the TD man catching 3 and being the lead receiver with 117 yards on 6 catches – he will always be Vick’s main man.  Of Note: Ashley Lelie had 4 catches for 58 yards as the second leading receiver.

Philadelphia 21 @ Tampa Bay 23
Unexpected loss to another inferior team – the Eagles have now given away 3 games this season.  McNabb threw 2 TD’s to Ronde Barber before he threw any to his own team and that killed the Eagles again – that plus leaving the ball on the 1 yard line at halftime as time ran out.  The Bucs really did nothing offensively, but they did not turn the ball over.  Williams was not able to get the 100 yards needed but he had 82.  McNabb did his fantasy owners proud with 303 yards passing and 3 TD’s and added 3 INT’s to that as well 2 that went for TD’s.  He also ran for 76 yards.  Westbrook was the man again rushing for 101 yards and catching 113 more with a TD.  Reggie Brown had 77 yards and a TD as well.  The Eagles season is toast as this is the 3rd game (2nd in a row) that they gave away.  Fantasy football is what they are playing now.

Detroit 24 @ N.Y. Jets 31
Leon Washington seems to have won the starting RB job for the Jets.  He had 129 yards and 2 TD’s.  Barlow had 12 carries for 41 yards and a TD of his own.  Pennington passed for 189 yards and a TD and a pick.  Coles has only 29 yards, Cotchery had 79 yards, McCareins has 1 grab of 44 yards for a TD.  Kitna tried to get the Lions back in it late with his 269 yards and 3 TD’s, but had 2 INTs as well.  Mike Furrey was the man this week with 109 yards receiving and a TD, Roy had one TD as well, but only 2 catches.  Kevin Jones was a fantasy factor again with 86 rushing yards and 57 receiving with 1 TD.  Furrey is up and down it seems, Williams had an off week as did Coles, but it seems Jones has decided to perform finally with 3 good fantasy games under his belt this year already.

Green Bay 34 @ Miami 24
Joey give the game to the Packers like he was still a Lion by throwing 3 INT’s.  Harrington had 2 TD’s and threw for 414 yards, but the INT’s killed the Dolphins…true 2 were deflected by McMichael, but the D could not stop the Pack from moving the ball.  Chambers never got involved in the game as he had 2 catches for 29 yards.  Marty Booker was the man with 110 yards and a TD, McMichael had 77 yards on 7 catches as well.  Derek Hagan had the other TD.  Ronnie Brown had 59 yards rushing and 63 receiving.  Miami could not cover Donal Driver.  He had 10 receptions for 93 yards and a TD.  David Martin had a TD and 31 yards.  Ahman Green had 118 yards rushing and a TD.  Brett Favre threw for 206 yards and 2 TD’s with no INT’s.  The Green Bay D also scored a TD on Woodson’s interception return.  Chambers is the odd man out in Mami and has to be considered a Bust.

San Diego 27 @ Kansas City 30
Tomlinson fumbled, can you believe it?  Larry Johnson came alive and the Chiefs take the game in the end on a kick.  Tomlinson only had 66 yards rushing, he added another 72 receiving and a TD and he also passed for a TD.  Antonio Gates seems to be back catching 9 balls for 63 yards and a TD.  Phillip Rivers played OK throwing for 266 and 2 TD’s and a pick.  The day belonged to Larry Johnson who had 2 scores and 132 yards rushing with an additional 29 receiving.  Tony Gonzalez was back this week with 138 yards receiving on 6 receptions.  Damon Huard threw 2 TD’s and 232 yards with no picks.  Chargers D was shredded by the Chiefs and perhaps they were overrated.  The West is not won yet and it appears that it will be a dogfight to the end.

Denver 17 @ Cleveland 7
Plummer tossed another 2 INT’s, but it did not cost the Broncos the game as he also had a TD pass and threw for 209 yards.  One score came as a result of the pick.  T. Bell had the best fantasy day for the Bronco’s with 115 yards rushing and a TD and another 11 yards receiving. Walker had a big day catching 9 balls for 107 yards.  Rod Smith had 6 balls for 69 yards.  This offense needs to get better.  The Browns could not run or pass.  Droughns had 33 rushing yards, Frye had 149 yards passing and a TD and INT.  Jurevicius was the top receiver with 4 balls for 40 yards.  Edwards had 6 yards and Winslow had 32.

Minnesota 31 @ Seattle 13
Hasselbeck has to have an MRI after injuring his knee.  So losing may not be the worst for the Seahawks this week.  Chester Taylor had a 95 yard TD run on his way to a 169 yard day.  He also had 4 catches for 19 yards.  Brad Johnson threw for 171 and a TD.  Marcus Robinson was the big target for the Vikings catching 4 balls for 77 yards and a TD.  Matt hasselbeck was 7 of 17 for 127 yards and a TD prior to getting hurt.  Wallace threw for 2 INTs and 134 yards in relief.  Maurice Morris was ineffective as usual only getting 49 yards.  Darrell Jackson proved he was the major threat again catching 7 passes for 136 yards and a TD, Branch had 4 catches for 60 yards.  Seattle may be in trouble if Hasselbeck misses time.

Arizona 9 @ Oakland 22
No more teams are winless as the Raiders beat the Cardinals.  Matt Leinart showed he was a rookie in this one throwing for 203 yards and 2 picks also he was only 13 of 32.  Bryant Johnson had 89 yards receiving and Anquan Boldin had 4 catches for 59 yards.  Edgerrin James was frustrated as usual with 34 yards rushing.  Oakland was missing LaMont Jordan so they had a mish-mash of players run the ball with Lee getting a TD and Fargas getting the carries and 66 yards.  Andrew Walter threw for 263 yards a TD and an INT.  Randy Moss had his best day this season with a TD and 129 yards receiving.  Anderson, Curry and Crockett also had 3 grabs a piece.

Washington 22 @ Indianapolis 36
Indy finally got on track in this one against Washington.  Portis ran for 43 yards and caught for 21 more before leaving with an injury, Betts filled in getting 52 yards rushing and another 41 receiving. Santana Moss also left with an injury after catching 30 yards worth.  Randel-El had 42 yards receiving and a return for a TD.  TE, Chris Cooley had 42 yards receiving and a TD.  Brunell did not throw a pick and had 2 TD’s and 226 yards.  The Colts ran effectively with Addai going for 85 yards and 20 receiving and Rhodes getting 26 additional yards rushing.  It is looking more and more like Addai is the guy here.  Manning threw for 342 yards and 4 TD’s going 25 of 35 in the process.  Harrison had 2 TD’s and 73 yards, Wayne had a TD and 122 yards.  TE, Dallas Clark had a TD and 41 yards, Ben Utecht was targeted more and had 4 catches for 52 yards.  The Colts remain unbeaten for another week.

Tonight’s game:
N.Y. Giants @ Dallas
The Giants are on the road and having seen the Eagles lose are once again given that glimmer.  I think that Bledsoe gets hit one too many times and Jones can not get to the 100 mark.  Owens will be average and Shockey could have a good game.  Glenn will be good.  Tiki needs to be fed the ball and thrown it to keep the defense in for the big plays to Burress.

Prediction:  Giants 30 – Cowboys 28
