2006 Fantasy Football Running Back Super Sleepers

sleepersWhy wait until free agency, when you can draft these players now?

You're at your draft, it's getting into the deep rounds and you have no idea who to take. At this point, you really don't care because you have had more than a few beers and you are convinced your team is Championship caliber. These last few picks are worthless. Maybe that's true, but most likely, come week one, you'll be scouring the waiver wire to pick up that "Hot" free agent who is the missing piece of your team and a perfect 13-0 season.

Everyone has their "sleeper" candidates, but usually, these are not sleepers at all...

Rather these so called sleepers are value picks; players like Daunte Culpepper and Laurence  Maroney; players that will certainly be drafted, but will present decent value for where they are selected in the draft. To Fantasygods.com, a sleeper is player that is not getting drafted (15 rounds) and is getting missed by all the "experts," only to be fought over in week one or two on the waiver wire. But why wait until week one when you can draft that player in the last round or two of your draft. How? Just read FANTASYGODS.com list of the 2006 SUPER SLEEPERS…fantasy players who will help your team but who currently have an ADP of 16.01 or less.

Running Backs:
N. Davenport: Green Bay
Fantasy experts agree that Ahman Green is a big question mark in Green Bay this season. Though Green put up MVP like numbers in 2003, Ahman struggled in 2004 and was a total bust in 2006; missing most of the season due to injury. Now 29, Green is more likely to be a dud this season than a fantasy stud. Enter Najeh Davenport. Though most owners are drafting Sam Gado (ADP: 9.03) Najeh Davenport is actually the backup in Green Bay. With a career 5.0ypc, and a veteran of the West Coast offense, Davenport,  will split carries with Green this season and look to step in full time if and when Ahman struggles.

M. Williams: St. Louis
Moe Williams is an eleven year veteran and an afterthought in most fantasy leagues; but he shouldn't be. Williams scored 11 TD's in 2002; the same year new St. Louis head coach Scott Linehan coached Williams in Minnesota. Linehan loves Williams and will not hesitate to use him in goal line situations. With starting RB Steven Jackson's durability a potential question mark, Williams could be even more than a goal line vulture in 2006.

D. Brown: Kansas City
Larry Johnson is a fantasy monster and the consensus #1 pick in most fantasy drafts, but for some reason, fantasy owners are not investing in his backup, Dee Brown. LJ can’t carry the ball every play, so Brown will see the field as he did in week one of the preseason, scoring once and rushing for 23 yards on 5 carries. Should Johnson go down for any length of time, Brown will have no problem stepping in as he did in three starts for the Carolina Panthers in 2003 when he scored 4 times. Even with the acquisition of Bennett we feel Brown may get the nod. What can Brown do for you? Take him in the last round and find out!

W. Lundy: Houston
Houston, we have a problem…and that problem is Dominick Davis' knees.
With new coach Gary Kubiak (Denver) Houston will center its offense on the running game and whoever is the feature RB will have a huge season. While many expect Davis will be the main guy, his decreasing YPC over the last two years and current injury concerns have thrust rookie Wali Lundy into the spotlight. Starting the 1st preseason game, Lundy responded with a monster effort rushing 9 times for 59 yards and one TD. Lundy will play this season and the more time Davis misses, the better chance Lundy has of outright starting.

D. Blaylock: New York Jets
Curtis Martin was supposed to be the unquestioned starter in New York this season. Now it looks like his career is over as injury concerns have him leaning towards retirement. But somebody will be the RB for the Jets this season, and although New York just traded for Lee Suggs (Cleveland), we are betting that Derrick Blaylock will be the starter this season. Blaylock received the start in week one and while not impressive, he earned the star for a reason. New HC, Eric Mangini loves toughness and Blaylock is all about toughness. Backing up P. Holmes in Kansas City, Blaylock displayed toughness and a nose for the goal line scoring 8 times in 2004. Expect Blaylock to be spurned on by the addition of Suggs and win the starting RB job outright by week 1.
